Use these questions before booking or paying for a piercing. Anatomy, jewellery, equipment and aftercare all form part of a responsible consultation.

Before you agree

  • The piercer assesses whether the requested placement is suitable for your anatomy and explains alternatives when it is not.
  • Jewellery size, style, material, finish and expected changes during healing are discussed before you consent.
  • Age, identity and guardian-consent requirements are checked for the location where the service is delivered.
  • You receive a clear price and understand what follow-up or jewellery changes are included.

During setup and service

  • The treatment area is clean, private and organised to separate clean and contaminated items.
  • A sterile, single-use piercing needle is opened for the procedure and is discarded into a sharps container.
  • Any reusable instruments are processed with a documented cleaning, packaging, sterilisation and monitoring system.
  • The piercer performs hand hygiene, changes gloves when contaminated and does not touch unrelated surfaces with procedure gloves.

Records and evidence to check

  • Ask what documentation supports jewellery material and manufacturer claims, and how items are traced to the supplier.
  • Check practitioner and premises permissions required by the relevant authority, along with suitable training and insurance.
  • Expect written aftercare, a follow-up route and clear direction to seek qualified healthcare support for concerning symptoms.
  • Use BAQA Find & Verify for the stated BAQA status, without treating it as a government licence or outcome guarantee.

Pause and ask more when

  • The practitioner will not explain jewellery material, sterilisation or the reason a device is suitable for the requested piercing.
  • No anatomy assessment, rushed consent or promises that healing will be problem-free.
  • Jewellery is unsealed, visibly damaged, poorly finished or has no credible source information.
  • A missing BAQA record is treated as proof of fraud rather than being checked with BAQA.
